Survival Manual for Irreparable Times
Fernanda Eugenio & AND Collective
Desde 2021
Conceived as a toolbox and performative survival kit for pandemic times, the "Survival Manual for Irreparable Times" take the form of a practical-theoretical video webseries, offering a purposeful introduction to the practices of Modus Operandi AND. The proposal, which explores the digital format and the language of video series, aims to promote the accessibility and popularization of MO_AND tools, offering a new plane of possible contact with AND Lab practices, regardless of the live encounter, be it in person or online.
In its first season, it is composed of three episodes will be produced, presenting the key issues of the inhabited philosophy of MO_AND: the basic structure of the practice and the different game modalities. In future seasons, the intention is to gradually compose a body of (self)courses that allow for autonomous experimentation with tools and games.
The choice of the name "manual" calls for the dimension of "assisted company for a solitary action" that manuals in general provide, but deviates from their eventual characteristic of a ready-made recipe, to be merely followed, or of technical instructions whose execution can be measured in terms of right/wrong. "Manual" emphasizes, on the contrary, the inevitability of error (not as a mistake but) as displacement and wandering, inherent in the gesture of getting one's hands dirty, touching the wound, and getting involved in the problem. It emphasizes, then, the inevitability of the risk and, therefore, the importance of also increasing, proportionally, the care. It is in this modulation that we seek to offer a manual: assist in the sense of delivering assistance, placing oneself at the service, offering support - in the face of the endless, perhaps impossible and, for this very reason, urgent task of repairing (the Irreparable). "Manual" thus calls into play the ethical inflections of care, of distributed attention, of maneuvering and handling, by which Modus Operandi AND is concretized in gesture, providing ways of reconnecting embodied wisdoms.
Composed of a selection of practices created over ten years of AND Lab, this material, together with the documentary by director Inês T. Alves, work as object-memory for the commemorative program Ten Years in Co-Positioning and the 2021 edition of the School of Reparar. Both, documentary and webseries, were produced with the institutional partnership of Garantir Cultura Program - República Portuguesa - Cultura, during the covid-19 pandemic.
