When we look at flocks of sparrows, schools of sardines and flocks of sheep, we ask ourselves: how do they connect to each other to move as a group? The answer lies in the body and lies in a collective dance organized under a relational ontology.
Composition in contemporary dance, based on organizational principles, a logic that engenders the choreographic organization of generative dance, overrides the logic of chaining steps and makes it possible to establish contingent relationships between performers (Leste, 2010). In composition, the aim is to find moderation in the synergetic and structural balances, proposing that participants adjust their actions and movements to co-create a collective joint dance.
In this program, using generative principles of relational composition, we will discover how to generate a joint dance that combines the activation of the body's states — Suspension, Attention and Impulse (Parra, 2020) —, interperformer relationships and the action of “Othering”.
The sessions begin with meditation activities, to perceive the “small dance” that occurs with each inhalation and exhalation, followed by a warm-up based on the fluidity of Vinyasa Flow Yoga and exercises for Modeling and coordinating space; and end with a general relaxation, followed by a conversation about the feeling of group (Togetherness) that was experienced.
Throughout the sessions, we will delve into the world of composition. Initially, we will focus on collective choreographic composition, by experimenting with movement games with group dynamics — triangulation and shoal effect — and by applying the concept of generative dance with a simple rule of interaction between bodies, which mathematically translates notions of self-organization. We move on to individual composition, where we work with Laban's concepts: Kinesphere and factors of human movement (weight, space, time and energy). To finalize the process, we apply individual composition to collective composition.
